i find the interface so much simpler.

you probably don't hear this much but it's not for what i can do on the Mac as it is what I couldn't do on XP.  I leave my machine running all the time (usually).

Stuff like 'cron' matters to me.  Having a shell matters to me.  Not fucking cygwin, a real shell.  And a single vendor that makes the whole package work well (Apple).  I didn't get that with Linux and I don't get it with Windows, but Apple has it.  That's not important to most people, but for me it's huge.  Now, there's all kinds of stuff I do on the Mac now which I can't imagine how I'd do it on a Windows machine.

For me to try switching from a Mac to Windows is almost harder than switching to a Mac from Windows now.  There are Mac-only packages I use that have no direct equivalent on the PC.   I'm glad there is some decent alternatives to QuickSilver on XP/Vista now but I think they all want money.  That would be for example, the first thing.

Another example ... I can't imagine going back to Visio after having used OmniGraffle.  I mean, no contest.

I get way more shit done on this computer than I ever have.  Even with the inconsistent keyboard layouts.

You can have my MacBook. The disk insertion noise comes on and off when you start it up, but that's because I hit it with my fist because AirPort wouldn't connect to the internet for fifteen minutes.

The PC im using has NEVER crashed on me yet dude and I use it to run the Adobe CS3 suite - after effects, photo shop and Premiere mainly. Im running XP pro and have it all tuned up so the only the bare minimum is running at any one time. Its not the highest spec in the world (intel Core 2 duo, 1G ram) but it runs like a dream and like I said it's never crashed. I seriously did think about buying a mac but ive had some VERY bad experiences with Mac users - its very likely they're just pricks anyway. IMO if you gear up your PC right it'll do exactly what a Mac will and more. I'm sticking with what I've got for now. Having said that we did some recording in a studio a few weeks ago and the guy had a G5 pro I think - and I think he had 8Gig of Ram in in. He was running Pro Tools HD3 and it was a sight to behold  blink.gif
QUOTE(XAL @ Jun 10 2008, 01:02 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I hope you're not insinuating that I'm some sort of PC elitest that buys products purely based on branding or cheap prices (I buy a product that will be dependable and is WORTH the price)...

Linux is awesome, nothing is compatible with it though...was thinking about getting a large capacity USB stick and booting Ubuntu off of it just to play around with).

I don't need to write java or code or anything, which as far as my understanding goes is much easier on a mac.
Hey now XP is a goddamn stable OS, better than Vista (if I had a choice i'd stick with my XPMCE05). (I've never had a BSOD or more than 5 crashes).
Personally I used macs up through 2002 and they have been the most petulent and frustrating computers i've ever had to use. Not to mention of my friends that own PC and mac laptops, not one of the pc's have broken down, but several of my friends with (newer) macbooks have had their HDD's die (not the user's fault) and whole laptops just crap out, one of them had 2 macbook pros die on him.
So the argument that MACs are more stable and dependable doesn't really seem all that truthful to me...

I need a laptop for word/data processing, internet, music, video, adobe suite (photoshop, illustrator), maybe animation/modeling and video editing somewhere down the line.
Most people say MACs are just the tits and creme for Adobe, Maya, video editing, what have you - but is the ease of use and dependability for those programs really that different for MAC vs PC?

Honestly I'd been using macs for my whole life until around 03 when I switched to PC, and I've had more macs die on me (both the pc's i have still work great). And my friends that have macbooks have had theirs bomb on them several times (for no damn reason, not because of negligence). Personally I find that PC's are much easier to use and easier to play around with things.

I might lean towards a MAC if they really are much better at handling those kinds of programs that I mentioned above - PS CS2 runs fine most of the time on my 3ghz p4 with 1 gig of ram...i like to use the web and WMP simultaneously with that program, but I suppose having 4GB of ram regardless of OS helps out in that regard...

I don't know why i capitilized macs like that. oh well.

that doesn't make any sense.  you've never had a mac, you've summarily called all mac users pricks, and despite not really knowing anything about a mac, you're convinced a geared-up pc will do exactly what a Mac will do.

hhhhhhokay.  makes sense.

really, you can keep your PC.  i'm not sure most mac users really care what computer you pick or what you do with it.   at least i don't.

well thats fine - what i meant was that a lot of people i've met use macs and they are very happy with them - to the point where they spend a lot of time pointing out to me why they're better than my computer and it kind of pisses me off. And I didnt call all mac users prick dude - i said the ones I'd met where. Im sure the vast majority of them are very nice. Really who the fuck cares at the end of the day. If what you use works then stick with it. And I used macs all through university so I do have a good idea of the interface and how the work.

I have a imac, that is about 4 years old and still does me just fine.  No problems yet.  My parents and in laws both bought pcs at the same time as I did (granted they both got dells and they did not spend as I did on my Mac) but both their dells have already crapped out on them.  (and that is with all sorts of antivirus and spyware protection)

I am planning on buying a dell laptop instead of a macbook here in the future because I don't want to spend a mint on a laptop and I would like to start dabbling in more online and pc gaming (which doesn't go too well with mac).  I don't know, for some reason I just am ready to give my mac to my hubby who uses it a lot for the Garage Band and Final cut programs and I will just take the dell for the gaming.

A desktop with the same specs will probably be cheaper, gaming laptops can be a wee bit expensive.

Nah it was the computer. At any given time there are at least eight different wireless connections that are picked up in my room. Big comp was working, Wii was working, PSP was working, MacBook wasn't. Try and go on the Apple website to find help and got dick cheese. Fist met laptop, laptop hasn't pulled that shit since.

For me, it's teh smugness, like the little look that they're better than you. Really pisses me off and when they had to resort to smear campaigns to sell their stuff I became ignorant, for lack of a better word. I could care less right now if they're superior

Dude I know the difference.  I've probably been working with UNIX by trade before you could even spell it.

If you want to pick nits I can take you a country mile on that thread and you would lose.  I've been a kernel contributor in both SysV and BSD going back 20 years.

Now you know more about me than I ever intended to share.

Who cares if you were using it back in the day, It just makes the error even worse for saying there is only one

I said there was only one version of Leopard.  You might try improving your reading comprehension before calling people out.

It's Gopher, calling people out on the internet is likely the only way he can get an erection.

Yep, only way, viagra stopped working ages ago, before you could even spell it  rolleyes.gif

UNIX (which for me, is worth $1000 at least) and there is only one edition of it

as I said, I stopped reading after that, which means I didn't read the part about leopard/leopard home/etc.

Which still supports my earlier opinion, There is more than one UNIX system

If you're going to be a complete asshat about stuff like this you should probably know what you're talking about.

There is only one UNIX that's why it's called the Single UNIX Specification.
There are a number of UNIX compliant OS's.
Seeing as you hate Macs so much I doubt you have used an actual UNIX compliant OS, these are the ones I use at work Solaris x86, Solaris Sparc, HPUX, AIX, Tru64, NCR, z/OS.
You may have used a UNIX like OS but a smart guy like you should know the difference.

XAL, you have a distinct advantage that many boardies do not, being in the US, you have this cool little resource called craigslist...yea, macs are WAY expensive...new, few months old, the price dreops quickly, and there's always a great selection. I haven't bought a new mac yet ( We're on our 7th? something like that).
Plus, what is really great about a mac laptop, two finger scrolling. Sounds like frill, but I get all messed up on PCs that don't have it, it's addictive.
