Reports of Shooting at Northern Illinois University

At least 17 people were reportedly shot after a gunman opened fire in a classroom at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., according to local police and university sources.

The gunman is dead, said DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler.

The gunman, who reportedly opened fire on students in a lecture hall, is believed to have been carrying a pistol and shotgun.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said it was possible the assailant may have taken his own life, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Northern Illinois University police say the gunman is "no longer a threat" and "the immediate danger has passed," according to the Associated Press.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital's Web site reported that 17 victims were taken there.

Three of the casualties were classified "condition red," with wounds to the head and chest and are being transfered to the trauma center at St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL.

Eight victims were classified statble with various wounds to the chest, back, shoulders and legs. And six recieved non lifethreatengin wounds, according to hospital officials.

The shooting is believed to have taken place in a geology class at Cole Hall in the campus center around 3 p.m. local time.

George Gaynor, a senior geography student, who was in Cole Hall when the shooting happened, told the student newspaper that the shooter was "a skinny white guy with a stocking cap on," according to the AP.

"Some girl got hit in the eye, a guy got hit in the leg," Gaynor said outside just minutes after the shooting occurred. "It was like five minutes before class ended too."

Student Edward Robinson told WLS-TV in Chicago that the gunman appeared to target students in one part of the lecture hall.

"It was almost like he knew who he wanted to shoot," Robinson said. "He knew who and where he wanted to be firing at."

At 3:20 p.m., the university posted an alert on its Web site warning students of a possible shooter.

"Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear. Avoid the King Commons and all buildings in that vicinity," the Web site posting read.

Thirty minutes later the site confirmed the shooting and said "several people" had been taken away by ambulance. In December, the campus was closed for a day following a threat referencing last April's Virginia Tech massacre, in which more than 30 people were killed, according to the Northern Star.

Police have established a perimeter around Cole Hall, and 15 to 20 emergency vehicles were in the area, reported the local newspaper, the Daily Chronicle.

It just makes me really depressed that someone is dark/messed up enough to want to do this. Like what was their life like? I hate knowing people are this messed up.

It's weird. Virginia Tech is far away, but when it happens in your home state 40 minutes from your home it gets even sicker. I'm not saying that this is worse than VT at all, I'm just saying when a lot of your friends go there it really hits you hard.

everyone talks about safety and what people could have done to make it safer. no one ever thinks about what we can do to prevent people from WANTING to do something like this.

it's not unusual to hear stories in the news from time to time of kids bringing knives into school and stabbing a classmate
but nothing like the Virginia Tech...

the media has to stop giving so much attention to the killers. they're practically glorifying these people. it makes these disgruntled fucks want to go out in a blaze of glory rather than just kill themselves. very sad.

"That which is rewarded will be repeated."

The reward being a famous death and 15 minutes of posthumous 'glory'.

i agree.    i remember having anxiety throughout my kid's school years because it seemed like every grade level she was in, there were these types of things happening within a year or so of her exact grade level.  now that she is in college, there seem to be more of them lately (at other colleges), thank god.

it kind of makes me think that it is this generation that somehow got fucked up, but maybe i am just paranoid because it hits so close to home with the age group of my kid.  i always think about mainstream influences like the media, video games or the use of (or non-use of) antidepressants or something.  i often wonder if society failed these kids (or their parents) somehow.

our generation is pretty fucked. a kid shot himself in the head at my school last year. luckily there was no rampage. just walked out the front doors and pulled the trigger on the front steps. its sad that so many of these are reportedly caused by incessant bullying.

I had a very weird experience today involving the NIU shooting.
I went to Andy's Pro Shop to get my finger holes resized for my bowling ball (yes I'm a bowler).   While he was measuring my fingers and marking off the ball we heard the story of a shooting softly being talked about on the radio in there.  We stopped for a second to hear that it was at a college.

The phone then rang and he stopped to answer.  It was his wife calling him to tell him that there was a shooting at NIU where his daughter is presently residing.  The wife said she couldn't get ahold of the daughter.  He then turned the news on and he tried to continue making the measuring marks on my bowling ball.  I could tell he was totally losing it in his mind.  I didn't know if I should tell him I would just come back, or if putting the idea in his head that his daughter might have been killed would do more worse than good.

So we had to continue on with this for about 10 more minutes while this guy is thinking his daughter could be dead.  I just wanted to quit taking up the guy's time and get out of there.  I could tell he could barely remember what he was doing.  Finally he finished up and I just kind of softly said "I hope everything is alright," and walked out.  I had no idea what to say.

Today is my birthday and all I could think about was this guy, and if his daughter is alright.  I know there is only a small chance she was involved, but to sit here and watch this guy knowing what was going on through his head was a pretty powerful experience.

I just hope when I pick the ball up tomorrow I find out she is alright, and my bowling ball isn't too fucked up (trying to shed some light).

hmmm, "it's like he knew who he was looking for...", very revealing.

I'm sure your friends are fine, but if you, or anyone, would like to hear my opinion on why people do this sort of thing, feel free to ask me. Not that I'm any expert, but I feel I'm one of the few people here that can really relate to where the shooter was coming from.

It seems to me that it's up to students to take a fucking stand at this point.  We need to make it known that we're not going to stand by while these selfish fucks mow down our fucking classmates.

And for Christ's sake, if one of these guys shows up, fight back!  You're telling me an entire student body can't take down one guy?

Sorry, I'm not in a good mood.

It's not that easy man. The kid fucking walked in an auditorium and started shooting at people from the stage.

There is so much darkness in the world it makes me fucking depressed.
