duh. silly me, didn't buy a ticket and got there to find it was sold out with a solid number of people already waiting at the door to get in, should anyone happen to leave... which i gathered was probably not going to happen, at least not in the numbers i needed it to.

so - Rydman, I'm looking forward to your report biggrin.gif

tonight was rather underwhelming. Sean Stone, Alain Johannes, and Sweet head played great but it was alot of shitty acts and space in between. Alain played two really haunting songs and everyone was there and you could feel the energy in that place. Brody was sitting right in front, all the guys from Queens, Sweethead, were just intranced like everyone else. Josh was there but left after a while. The show did not start till after 9 so everything ran late and acts got cut. Sweethead kicked ass for four songs but the band thought they did terrible. Serrina was totally drunk and totally hot though. I was drunk and Aaron's songs with Tony and Troy Boy just didnt do it for me so I bailed. Aaron takes ten fuckin years to tune his guitars and I just lost patience. Tony played a sweet solo track just before Aaron came on though. Allessandro was there and he might be playing now for all I know but everything ran way late. The Wires/Jubilee sound engineer's friend played and she was fucking terrible- how could she play and not Wires on Fire? Nick Jago played some really lame acoustic stuff with violin and the crowd kept talking and he was fuckin pissed. He seemed like such a nice guy but the music was awful. Anyway I heard (with Zander tossed in) around 10 good songs for 40 minutes in 5.5 hours so it was cool but not insane. I have work at 8am so I better be off to bed. Hope you all had more fun than me!
I don't want to sound like a whiner cause it was 10 bucks. Thw Hotel cafe is a nice venue. Drrrrruuuuunnnnnnkkkkk

Welp, just got home a little while ago and I have some really nice memories to take with me from tonight, unfortunately I got two pictures all night, I get really sucked in by the moment sometimes and forget to take pictures, also being stone cold sober, for some reason when drunk i go nuts with snapping pics of everyone around . So anyways there was alot of waiting around, we got there about 8:45-9ish i think, I had no idea who was playing and when anyone was going on and at one point a girl was doing an acoustic set and everyone kept getting "ssssshhhhed", ummm okay and I saw some great photography, the raffle didn't happen which was a bummer because I was hoping to win a box of stuff for my kid. Also a few tidbits off the top of my head without revealing anything private, (I wouldnt want people to post about my personal convos so to keep it short and sweet), hanging out with gang fang for the second time this time sober so it was like the first time all over again, a really cool dude, and for you spinneretters... Brody and I talking about Canadian weather and how Californians are spoiled rotten when it comes to our climate and that hats are the key to keeping warm kids! Josh, well everything we talked about was hilarious as usual, the house bunny, roofie mints,Chuck E. Cheese Balls and well you kinda had to be there... I can't pick one thing, Alain telling me that after two weeks in the desert it gets to the point of insanity and that he's trying to keep busy and he's still healing but doing better, on our way out my husband and Joey talked drum talk cave man style,(while I stood there clicking my heels together like Dorothy and twirling my hair), meeting Spaghettaboutit and Violet and soooo happy that poor Violet FINALLY got in, they were outside every time I went to have a cig and I felt so bad for her, they are really nice peeps, I also felt bad for the people waiting in line outside, with sad puppy faces and shivering shoulders, hopefully none of them had to travel very far (getting tickets online was the way to go!) and alot of other stuff and thangs. I didnt get a chance to see Alain play because we had to get on the road and it took 3 hours to drive home, lots of accidents on the freeway tonight, no bueno. Also St. Pauli Girl non alcoholic beer is disgusting, especially after nursing a Guinness never again. tongue.gif

All in all I had a pretty good time but completely distracted by the fact that we had a huge drive ahead of us and that my husband had to work the next day, we were invited to the after party across the street @ the VMC which was a total tease, the thought of a gigantic plate of nachos at that point in the evening was making my stomach growl and my mind spin! But I think the effort behind this party was really obvious, they really tried to make it a nice holiday shindig it was a good idea and it was well worth the 10 bucks to have a few nice conversations and catch up with a few folks, but like marshallcanyon said alot of stuff was missing and running late but that's the way things go sometimes. Now I will try to go to bed. blink.gif

I also think the effort was there to have a cool cheap gig for everyone. It just didn't go off like I think they wished. Alain's songs were a highlight as well as talking to Alain, Brody, Joey, Dean and others... Josh, Troy, and Mikey were around but the moment to chat with them never presented itself.

Cool place, frickin' tiny place.

And yes, it was a long frickin' night! I'm beat!

LAME....all in all. the ticket price was good, because if it was any more i would have felt really ripped off. We bailed right as Nick Jago came on. the guy before him reading a chapter in his 'Office Space' type novel was it for us. We were all draggin at that point. It was boring. The best part of the night for me as Dios Malos, he was rad. He told a story how he met Aaron and Travis in the 3rd grade and they were getting high in the forth grade to Pink Floyd. Then he played Comfortably Numb, that was cool.

It just seemed like they didn't have their shit together, felt like a free for all, like anyone could get up and play. I would have liked to see more of the people that were supposedly the bill.

And Asskicker couldn't get in, bummer, especially when my other buddy called after she left and bailed on his ticket.

i'm not really in the holiday spirit this year and this show didn't help, bah humbug.

going out to the desert to look for the lizard king. i may not return.

I was walking by Josh at one point and this guy was asking him if he was playing. he responded "Fuck No". Brody looked just delicious as always. Troy's hair was really long. Mikey looked like a lounge singer.

ha! good old murphy's law in effect! it would have been good to hang, but as it is I got a sweet ass serenade and smiles by this unlikely but kick ass duo on the street where I parked - so the evening wasn't entirely without music for me cool.gif

Yeah, I definitely got a sense of.....disorganization about this or that they tried to fit too much into too little time. Highlights of the night were Alain Johannes and Sweethead. By time Aaron North came on, I was kinda too tired to care. Jeordie White was a no-show (not surprised but still disappointed) and Birthday Twin's live set never materialized either and I'd been looking forward to that. And that huge Christmas tree in the back room -- i can't even count the times I almost fell into that damn thing -- and i wasn't even that drunk. That shit was in a bit of a bad spot, traffic wise.

aww violet you got in, lucky
man, and the worse of all the pornstache was off

i knew my chances of getting my way were slim, so all i did was catch a few flicks but i was hoping to go

did anybody else get any other photographs in, EH?

So i suspect any chances of a new years eve performances w/queens and eodm are unlikely this year

yuuuuup, pretty much how it went.

the "poet" guy spouting off that verbal poop made me want to kill myself.
I actually didn't totally hate Sid Brown, but I did think the dancer was hella annoying and off beat. plus, why need a dancer? music should speak for itself.
I was really impressed by Dios Malos, and am def. checking out their stuff/upcoming shows.
Alain was amazing and I was left speechless.
Sweethead fucking ruled, period.
I liked the one song performed by Tony B.
I have no idea what the eff was wrong with Aaron.

Everything else was total shit.
But I would pay 10$ to see Alain play just two songs any time and get the chance to check out Sweethead. Plus, I got to hang out with Spagettaboutit again and meet Violet, who's super sweet (& super lucky!)

My only regret was standing near the stage pretty much the whole time, watching the shit bands and not having enough balls to talk to Josh, Joey or Brody.

I blew the show off for the Giants game, but I'd go see Dios Malos just for this statement:

"We understand that being from LA has its stigmas to certain folks… Well, fuck you. I, personally, am an LA aficionado, and I resent the fact that true Angelinos have to put up with fucked up labels and misconceptions because of people who move here from other shitholes to act, start shitty bands, and/or get in “the business.” LA is more than just rats’ nests like Hollywood, Silverlake, and the Westside. It has a tremendous amount of culture and history that is simultaneously ignored, exploited, and trashed by these fuckheads. Luckily, we’re from a different part of LA.

We like things that are genuine, soulful, and dirty. It isn’t always beneficial for a band to defy categorization, which is why we are generally disregarded in LA, and at war with douchebag promoters that really don’t know shit anyways. Despite all that there are kind folks out there that support us and come up to us at shows, or on our website, and really make us feel good about our efforts. We’ve definitely had many good years being in this band and we’re gonna be doing it for many more."

Damn straight (says the 5th generation Angeleno).

And let's not forget the occasional Unida reunion show (Feb - 150 people) and Brant's only US date (Sept - 70 people). And one of the greatest bassists ever, Mike Watt from fIREHOSE/Minutemen playing to 40 drunks in San Pedro a few weeks ago. Yeah, LA isn't good for the big shows, it's the little ones that make it for me.

Upon further reflection, last night pretty much sucked since it had so much potential. Thank god for Alain and Sweethead otherwise it was a total waste. I actually dug Sid Brown's minamalist stuff since it was only like two songs it was harmless. But that girl in the red plaid jacket who was friends with Mikey from Wires/Jubilee was fucking terrible and the dead meadow dude after sweethead played way longer than them and they sucked ass. And yeah, Aaron was high on meth so I left after his first shitty cover song, but Tony's solo song beforehand kicked ass. So Tony, Sid, Alain, and Sweethead= around 40 minutes of good stuff in over 5 hours, glad I got there at 915pm. Oh well, cooler stuff awaits, Snoop Dogg at the Glass House, does it get any better?

yeah, hey, i wish i lived in la for things like this, the benefit show, the spinerette shows and all the other stuff that goes down that i have no chance of attending

but reading that statement, and knowing nothing about the city, i truly believe what he's saying and will check out his music

Mike Watt is playing the Redwood Bar and Grill on Dec. 27th. It'll be exactly about 40-50 drunks.

Yeah she is. God damn!

This only fuels my intense East Coast - West Coast rivalry.
