The original version was more serious and intended to be scary. But it failed in japan so when it got licensed for an english dub by ADV, the creators allowed them to do what ever they wanted with the script so it would sell, with the only requirement being that they keep the original plot and names of the characters. And let me just say that it was for the better. This dub is just hilarious and way over the top.
